Venice

Venice, better known as the "city of canals" is the capital of the region of Veneto and of the province of Venice in Italy. The city of Venice covers a total area of 412 square kilometers. Venice is laid across numerous small islands in the marshy Venetian Lagoon along the Adriatic Sea in northeast Italy.

Venice developed into a city state within the ninth to the twelfth century. The high position of Venice at the head of the Adriatic Sea has made Venetian naval and commercial power almost invulnerable. The population estimate of Venice is nearly 272,000 inhabitants.

City Information :

· Venice is famous worldwide for its canals. It is built on an archipelago of 118 islands formed by about 150 canals in a shallow lagoon.

· Water taxi, water bus and ferries are chief means of transportation in Venice.

· Venetian buildings are constructed on closely spaced wood piles which penetrate alternating layers of clay and sand.

· Venice experiences very high humidity with hot weather in July and August during the summer. Temperatures in summer usually range 30°C - 33°C, dropping in winter to between 0°C - 3°C. Due to its location on the Adriatic coast, Venice often experiences thunderstorms and rain showers which tend to cause flooding.
