General Information:
Yangon previously named, as Rangoon is the largest City of Mynamar. The city is placed at the intersecting point of the Yangon and Bago Rivers, and is about 30 km away from the Gulf of Martaban. According to the census of 2005, the population is almost 4,082,000. On 26 March 2006, Yangon was ousted from being the capital of Mynamar.
The city founded by the Mon, was destroyed by a fire in 1841, and suffered extensive damage in the Second Anglo-Burmese War of 1852.

The British Empire seized Yangon in 1852, and transformed it into the commercial and political hub of Burma. Other exports, like raw cotton, precious stones, cheroots, and ivory were exported. By the early 1900s, Rangoon had public services and infrastructure at par with London. Rangoon resurfaced after being heavily injured by earthquake, Tsunami, World War II and is under the military Junta now.
The climate is monsoonal, a rainy season from June to October, a cooler and drier winter from November to February, and a hot dry season from March to May.
The winter season from November to January is favorable with the Tourist as it markedly less humid and cooler.

Transportation:
Taxicabs are readily available in the city but are must be hired with drivers. No motorbikes are permissible in Yangon district; three-wheel bicycle can be used for short journeys. You can walk but the ill repaired footpaths can mar your journey. You can also enjoy a ferry ride across the Yangon River.

Chinatown offers a wide selection of wares from Colonial coins, paintings to other attractive souvenirs and is open mainly from 3 pm to 9 pm. Bogyoke Aung San Market is a great place to buy Burmese handicrafts, such as wood carvings or lacquer ware, clothing and fabrics.
Shwedagon Paya's entrance hallway has different stalls that sell Burmese antiquities, including papier-mâché owls, wood-carved statues, and Buddhas.
There are several shopping malls in Yangon, like the Dagon Centre and the FMI Centre and the goods available are mainly from Thailand and China.
