General Information:
The capital of modern Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar, is a city with a chronicle of over three hundred and sixty years. Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, is located on the bank of the Tuul River and surrounded by imperial mountains. Ulaanbaatar got a legal status in 1924 and it was renamed Ulaanbaatar City as the capital city of the Mongolian People's Republic. The first master plan for Ulaanbaatar development began to be enforced from 1950s. Since the 1960s, there has been an urbanization policy, with planting of gardens and trees and provision of municipal services. Ulaanbaatar is famous as the capital city with the coldest climatic conditions in the world. The temperature ranges from minus 26 degrees in January to 24 degrees in July.

The most visited city sites are Sukhbaatar Square, Gandan monastery and the Zaisan Hill War Memorial.

Gorki-Terelj is a two- hour drive from Ulaanbaatar, with green fields skirted with a dazzling variety of edelweiss and other wildflowers replete with fascinating rock formations against a backdrop of pine-clad mountains and wooded streams.
It has been rightly been called 'a museum of nature and the animal kingdom'.
Khan Khentii is the homeland of Chinggis Khan; Khan Khentii is covered with forests and is a protected area northeast of Ulaanbaatar.
Manzushri Monastery is in a luxuriant valley of the Bogd Khan Mountain an hour's drive from Ulaanbaatar. Destroyed in 1932, the only remaining temple from the Twenty tells its story in the by lanes of the Museum.
Gun-Galuut Nature Reserve is truly the marvelous combination of mountains, steppes, pretty lakes, rivers and wetlands with its famous rare wildlife species a two hour drive from Ulaanbaatar to the East.. It is a base to the world endangered Wild mountain sheep-Argali, White-napped crane, Siberian White Crane, Hooded Crane, Swan Goose, Whooper swan etcetera. Tourists visiting the Nature Reserve have the unusual opportunity to watch and take photos of the endangered species, fishing, rafting and kayaking in the lakes and rivers, hiking, trekking and camping in the beautiful and peaceful nature, yak and camel, riding horse, and getting introduced to traditional nomadic lifestyle and culture.

The roads in Mongolia are in very bad shape yet you have no other option if you wish to visit remote destinations. Paved roads are only available surrounding the major towns including Ulaanbaatar city. Therefore, if you are interested in touring the interiors it is advisable to hire a Jeep. Buses and Mini Buses are also a good option faster than the Trolleybus. In the capital, you will find Taxi and Private Cars and it is better to go by meter than by the time limit.

Shopping:
The best buys include pictures, cashmere garments, camel-wool blankets, national costumes, boots, jewelry, carpets, books and handicrafts. The infamous black market on the outskirts of Ulaanbaatar is a large, crowded mart, which has curious varieties of items on offer.
