Najaf, the capital of Najaf province, is an Iraqi city 160 km south of Baghdad. Najaf is one of the holiest cities of Shia Islam as it houses the tomb of Ali ibn Abi Talib who was more famous as Imam Ali. Imam Ali was the first imam according to the Shia Islam. Founded in 791 by the Abbasid Caliph Harun -ar Rashid, the najaf city, situated near the Sassanid city of Suristan, was a part of the Middle Bik-Kavad province of Persia. The name of the city which when broken into 'nay' and 'jaff' means 'dry river'.

Imam Ali Mosque: the religious place receives hundred and thousands of tourists annually. The walls and the dome of the mosque are studded with gold and other precious metals.
Wadi As-Salam: also known as the"Wadi pf Peace" the place is the largest cemetery in the entire Muslim world. This cemetery houses tombs of many prophets.
In addition to these two prime attractions you can come across a number of mosques and castles that are quiet impressive.

Transportation
The Imam Ali International Airport which is undergoing construction is expected to lift the city as the second capital of Iraq. As the city enjoys an extensive roadway network, it is connected to all the major cities of the country.
