Mosul

Mosul, the northern Iraqi city, is located along the shores of the Tigris River. Situated some 250 miles from Baghdad, Mosul is the capital of Ninawa Governorate. the word muslin has some Arabic names which means the 'City of Two springs', 'the paradise', 'the Green' . The place is well known for its muslin fabric that was manufactured here. Equally important are the mosul marble that belonged to this area. Having a population of 1,739,800 as par the estimates of 2002 census, the city in terms of population stands next to Baghdad and Basra. The city is as old as 8000 years. Initially built on an Assyrian fortress, and later known as Nineveh, Mosul became an important commercial center in the 6th century BC. In the days the city grew to flourish itself as a major oil producing country.

Tourist Attractions:

The Mosul Museum: Built out of Mosul marble, the place helps to throw light on the arty-facts of the ancient cities of Nineveh and Nimrud.

The Umayyad Mosque: The 52 meters long minaret that exhibits beautiful brickwork was the first mosque of the city built in 640 AD.

The Nuriddin Mosque: Though the mosque was built by Nuriddin Zanki in 1172 AD, you can see a marble fountain and a mihrab here.

The Mosque of Prophet Yunus: it is the burial place of Prophet Yunus who is acknowledged as the 'Biblical Jonah'.
The Mujahidi Mosque: Built of marble with a dome that towers on the top, this mosque is believed to be the burial place of Prophet Jerjis.
Qara Seari: The palace also known as the Black Palace, is the palace of Sultan Badruddin Lulu
St Peter's Church: the 13th century church has an underground church and a cemetery that houses some of the tombstones of Moslawi merchants.
Church of Mar Toma: The undectable church that hides itself behind the thick wall has some of the beautiful chandeliers that are bound to dazzle your eyes.
Monastery of St. Matte: located on top of a high mountain, the monastery displays Syrianic scriptures.
