Tripoli is the capital city of Libya. It has a population of 1.68 million. The city is located in the northwest of the Libya on the edge of the desert, projecting into the Mediterranean Sea. Along the shores of Tripolitania for more than 300 kilometers, coastal oases alternate with sandy areas and lagoons. The Phoenicians founded Tripoli, in the 7th century and named it Oea. Tripoli the land of three cities derives its name from the three ancient cities - Sabratlia, Oea (present Tripoli) and Leptis Magna.

Tripoli is the largest city, the principal seaport, and the largest commercial and manufacturing centre in Libya. It is also the site of Al-Fateh University. Due to the city's long history, there are many sites of archaeological significance in Tripoli.
The climate is typical Mediterranean, with hot dry summers, cool winters and some modest rainfall. The city enjoys warm summers and mild winters with an average July temperature of 22-29 degree. Arch of Marcus Aurelius dates back from AD163, built as a testament to the power of the Roman army.
