General Information:
Monrovia is the capital city of Liberia on the west coast of Africa. It is a major port city with wonderful views of the Atlantic Ocean, the Mesurado River and St. Paul River. It was first occupied by the Portuguese sailors during the 16th century. It was named Cape Mesurado at that time. The American settlers established their colonial settlement of Christopolis in 1822.

The city was renamed as Monrovia after James Monroe, the President of the United States in 1824. The infrastructure of the city was severely affected after the siege of Monrovia during the Liberian Civil War. Today's Liberia houses a population approximately 572,000 (2003 census). It is an important harbor popular for latex and iron ore exports. Monrovia is the principal administrative, commercial, and financial center of Liberia. The climate is tropical with dry winters and wet summers. There are several nightclubs, restaurants and bars around Gurley Street.

Tourist Attractions:
The Kendeja Cultural Center off the Robertsfield Highway and the Beasao village situated at a few distance from Monrovia are some special tourist attractions of the city. The dainty Providence Island located between downtown Monrovia and the port is another major tourist visiting place of Monrovia. Flights from Monrovia to Conakry (Guinea) Accra and Freetown are operated by Ghana Airways. Minibuses and bush taxis are popular local transports. Bushes taxis are opted more by the tourists, as they are safer and less crowded. There are boat services from the city to Greenville and Harper.
