Maseru

General Information:

Maseru situated on the bank of Caledon River bordering South Africa is the sprawling capital city of Lesotho. Maseru developed as a British settlement during the mid nineteenth century. It was the capital of the British Basutoland, which was renamed, as Lesotho after is independence. Maseru overwhelms tourists with its splendid buildings and architectures. The countryside offers splendid scenic views with beautiful gardens with peach blossoms. Once a tiny trading town Maseru today is a well-developed metropolis with modern complexes, fashionable shops, restaurants and hotels. The nightlife is vibrant with stunning bars and casinos. The population of the city is about 180,000 according to 2004 census. The climate is temperate with dry winters and wet summers.

Tourist Attractions:

Roma National University located in a beautiful valley at Roma is a major tourists attraction to those visiting Maseru. It is Lesotho's renowned educational center as well as headquarters to the Roman Catholic Mission. The Catholic Cathedral situated at the entrance of the city offers spellbinding views with its colonial style architecture. Lancer's Gap, on north of Maseru, offers spectacular views of the City. Caledon Valley is another popular tourist visiting spot. It witnessed the battle (1852) between the Basotho warriors and Royal Lancers in which the former succeeded.

Transportation:

Maseru International Airport, a few distances from the City center is Lesotho's major airport. Mission Aviation offers internal flights from Maseru to Mokhotlong, Thaba Tseka and Katse. Maseru has rail links with other South African business places. Buses and minibus taxis are popular local transports. Car hire is also available in Maseru.

Shopping:
Maseru offers plentiful shopping opportunities with variety of markets and luxurious shopping complexes. Thorkild Hand Weaving Center attracts tourists with beautiful traditional Lesotho merchandises.
