Malabo

General Information:

Malabo the capital city of Equatorial Guinea is a picturesque city on the northern coast of Bioko Island. Founded by the British in 1827 it acted as a major naval port. Freed slaves from various countries took refuge over there. The island was called Santa Isabel when the Spanish regained the city. It got its current African name Malabo in 1973 due to President Macías Nguema's effort. The city offers stunning views of the Pico Malabo volcano. The city has flourished rapidly with time housing a population of about 100,000. The climate is tropical with heat and humidity all through the year. The city is a popular tourist-visiting place with a good number of Spanish colonial architectures, plazas, markets and bars. Malabo is also the site of Frederick Forsyth's famous novel The Dogs of War in Malabo.

Tourist Attractions:

The Spanish Tourist Center provides geographical location and the maps of the city. The Colonial Cathedral on the Independence Avenue attracts tourists with its Spanish gothic style architecture. Malabo Cathedral, City Hall and the Malabo Court Building are other sight seeing on the area. A trip to Luba or even Riaba offers magnificent scenic views with some of the finest beaches. A visit to Riaba will also opportune the tourists to meet the indigenous Bubi tribes. Moka Valley located on the way to Riaba attracts tourists with its astounding crater lakes.

Transportation:

The international airport of Malabo is located on the city's outskirts. There are flights into Malabo from Gabon (Air Gabon), Douala Cameroon (Air Cameroon), Madrid (Iberia and Spanair) and Amsterdam(KLM). Bush taxi connects major part of the island. Minibuses travel along the coastal routes between Bata and Acalayong.

Shopping:
The vibrant market place in the city center offers everything from vegetables, fruits to traditional garments and crafts. Ornaments and wood sculptures are found on the shops downtown Malabo.
