Luanda

General Information:

Luanda is the capital city of Angola on south central Africa. The early Africans called it Loanda meaning flat land. Portuguese explorer Paulo Dias Novais landed the city on 1575 on a fleet of seven ships. On the coming year he established Sau Paulo Settlement that was named as Sao Paolo de Loanda. The spectacular silver mines dotting the area attracted the explorer. It was a major slave-trading center during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. It was Angola's principal administrative center from 1627. It flourished as a modern city with several new districts and civil constructions since Angola's independence. Presently it is a bustling port city with an estimated population of 4.5 million. The climate is tropical with long dry and warm seasons.
