General Information:
Lilongwe is the capital city of Malawi in southeastern Africa. Lilongwe lies on the central region of Lilongwe on the bank of Lilongwe River. It was a small village during the early times. Later on it was under British colonial administration. It became the capital of Malawi in 1974. It is the country's principal political center. The city with many districts known as areas is an interesting place of visit. According to 2003 census the population of the city is 597,619. The climate is generally hot and humid with rainfall from April to October.

Tourist Attractions:
The City Center attracts modern tourists with its magnificent hotels, corporate offices buildings, airline offices and banks. A good number of bars, cafes, nightclubs, restaurants and casino are to be found here. The Old Town nearby the city center is a bustling commercial center with variety of shops, markets and restaurants. The Sanctuary on Kenyatta Rd is a fascinating place with excellent sporting facilities in the Lilongwe Golf Club. The Kasungu National Park in the northwest of Lilongwe houses diversified wild life amidst pristine nature. Kamuzu Academy termed, as the 'Eton of Africa' on the north of Lilongwe is a major tobacco growing area.

Transportation:
Kamuzu International Airport, located on the north of Lilongwe in the Lumdazi suburb is a major airport of Malawi. Air Malawi flies regularly between Lilongwe and Blantyre.
Regular flights to Johannesburg, Harare, Nairobi and Zimbabwe operate from this airport. Besides Africa, UK and Ireland offers air services to Lilongwe. There are no railway links to the city. There are various Stagecoach buses that travel around the city. Coachline buses are the most expensive ones. The Express bus service traveling between the main towns is also comfortable.

Shoprite and the Nico Centre in Area 3 of the Old Lilongwe and the Crossroads Shopping Center city near the Mchinji are popular westernized shopping centers of the capital. There are exquisite gift shops, curio shops, fashionable clothes stores, ornament shops, perfumes, bags, local handcrafts and fast food joints. Old Town Mall display fabulous arts and crafts galleries, DVD shops, grocery centers and cloth stores.

Lilongwe is famous for its wonderful hotels and restaurants.
