General Information:
Libreville is a charming and vibrant capital city of Gabon in west central Africa. The city is located near the Gulf of Guinea on the Gabon River. It was the hometown of the antique Mpongwe tribes before the French domination. Founded in 1843 the city was named Libreville (1848) due to a large number of freed slaves that took refuge on the city. During the French colonial period it was a chief port region and a timber-trading center. The city is divided into various areas like Batterie IV or the residential area, Oloumi or the industrial area and Mont-Bouët and Nombakélé commercial areas. The equatorial forest nearby overwhelms tourists with its lush greeneries and wild animal species. A visit to the city also opportune the tourists to participate in exciting sports like Golf, tennis, bowling, squash and horse riding. The population is 578,156 according to 2005 census. The climate is equatorial with warm and humid seasons.

The National Museum is famous for its splendid woodcarvings especially the indigenous Fang style that is reflected in many of Picasso's figurines. Ethiopian Airlines operates flights through the airport. Libreville's railway station is located in Owendo. The Trans-Gabon Railway line links to Franceville. There are regular ferry services between Libreville and Port-Gentil. Minibuses and bush taxis are popular local conveyances.
