Kampala

General Information:

Kampala is the capital city of Uganda on the east of Africa. Housing a population of 1,208,544 (2002), it is the largest urban city in Uganda. Most of the landscape is plateau with undulating hills and marsh wetlands. The city was the ancient capital of the Buganda kingdom in the early times. That is why several antique sites like the Naggalabi Buddo Coronation Site, the Buganda Parliament and the Buganda Court of Justice dot various regions of the city. Kampala is also termed as "Hills of the Impala" by the British settlers. Impala is a particular species of antelope that roamed freely in the region. Impala was a favorite antelope-hunting place of Buganda king Kabaka. Though much of the city has been ravaged due to the Uganda-Tanzania War, some newer constructions including has led to the development of the city. With some of the finest architectures, mosques and palaces Kampala is worth a place to visit.

Tourist Attractions:

Kasubi Tombs nestled on the Kasubi Hill, Kabaka's Palace on the Mengo Hill, Kibuli Mosque on the Kibuli Hill are the marvelous Buganda sites of Kampala that are really worthseeing. Namirembe Protestant Cathedral, Rubaga Catholic Cathedral, Ssezibwa Falls, Ugandan National Theatre and Nommo Art Gallery are other places of visit in Kampala. Kololo Hill is the highest hill housing the Uganda museum. Mother Temple of Africa located on Kikaya hill is one of the seven Bahá'í Houses of Worship in the world and a principal tourist attraction.

Transportation:

Entebbe International Airport is located in the Entebbe city on southwest of Kampala. Boda bodas or the motorcycles are popular local transports with faster speed. Matatus are a series of minibuses that run in scheduled routes. Taxis can also be hire to travel around the city.

Shopping:
St. Balikuddembe Market (formerly Owino Market) and Nakasero Market are two popular market areas of Kampala. Owino located on the city center offers a wide array of merchandizes ranging from fashionable clothes to sizzling African delicacies. Garden City is a westernized shopping mall with luxurious shopping items. Other renowned shopping areas in the city are Shoprite Checkers on the Jinja road and Uchumi at Garden City.

There are a good number of hotels in Kampala that provide comfortable accommodation.
The hotels vary from expensive to mid budget and cheaper ones. Sheraton Kampala Hotel situated in the center of Kampala amidst pristine natural surrounding is a premier hotel of Kampala.
