Harare

General Information:

Harare or the former Salisbury is the capital city of Zimbabwe. The city consists of a population of 2,800,000 (2006). The city is a sprawling metropolis and the country's major administrative, economic, and trading center. Tobacco, maize, cotton, and citrus fruits are the major trading items of Harare. Harare is a beautiful city with colorful parks, botanical gardens, game reserves, and jacaranda lined streets. Harare is famous for its unique historic sites, colonial styled buildings, museums and art galleries. Moreover a temperate climate has made Harare or Sunshine City one of the favorite holiday spots of Africa.

Tourist Attractions:

African Unity Park treasures some of the fantastic tropical blooms. National Gallery displays a wide range of original Zimbabwean arts and crafts. Queen Victoria Museum, Harare Gardens, Robert McIlwaine Recreational Park, the Lion & Cheetah Park and the Larvon Bird Gardens are some other sight seeing of Harare. The wonderful aloes and cycads at Ewanrigg Botanical Gardens are worth visiting. Harare is the site of the University of Zimbabwe, the largest and most complete institution of higher learning in Zimbabwe.

Transportation:

Harare International Airport operates flights to and from major countries of the world. Air Zimbabwe provides flights to Harare. Private air charters are available from Harare to fly to the remote safari areas. The road condition is fair. Car hire is available. Express buses are ideal for tourists as they travel between major tourist spots in a speed greater than other local buses.

Shopping:
Mbare Musika Market located near the main bus station displays variety of goods and merchandises. There are separate stalls showcasing leather goods, clothing herbs medicines and crafts. There are large shopping complexes with huge collection of clothes, perfumes, shoes, curios, gift items and other products that cater to tourists of all ages and budgets.
