Gaborone

General Information:

Gaborone is the darling capital of Botswana. Flanked by Kgale and Oodi hills Gaborone lies in a beautiful valley in the southeastern part of the country. The original name, Gaborones, is derived from the name of Kgosi Gaborone the tribal chief of the Gaborone's Village of the BaTlokwa. Today Gaborone is a sprawling modern city with numerous modern buildings, hotels, restaurants, casinos and nightclubs. Gaborone is famous for its numerous historical sites. The population of the city is 1639833. The climate is semi arid with warm winters and hot summers.

Tourist Attractions:

Gaborone University and National Museum is a prime tourist attraction of Gaborone. Orapa House attracts tourists with spectacular diamond exhibits. The old part of the city termed as Village houses some historical sites tat are in their ruins. Old Government Rest House has been the shelter to many renowned personalities like Cecil John Rhodes.

Mokolodi Nature Reserve a few miles from Gaborone is a principal tourist spot for its rich collection of rarefied animals like white rhino, reedbuck, various antelope, hyena, giraffe, zebra and warthog.
There are some wonderful self-catering chalets on the reserve that provide over night accommodation with game drives and guided walks. Gaborone Dam offers unique water sports facilities.

Transportation:

Various international flights arrive and depart from Gaborone airport or Sir Seretse Khama International Airport. The main Botswana Railway (BR) line runs daily between Francistown-Gaborone-Lobatse. Children fewer than seven need not have to cut tickets. Shared taxis and mini buses are popular public transports.

Shopping:
There are a good number of craft shops and markets in the city. The craft stores sale exquisite pottery, basketwork, leatherwork and hand-woven objects. The large shopping malls offer excellent shopping opportunities to the tourists.

Hotels:
There is wide array of hotels in Gaborone ranging from expensive to moderate to less costlier ones. Gaborone Sun Hotel & Casino is a first rate hotel offering breathtaking views of Okavango and Kalahari. Hotel facilities include restaurants, bars, Coffee houses, babysitting, squash courts, gym and Tennis Courts.
Cresta President Hotel located on Botswana Rd-Central Mall is a five-story hotel nearby the Gaborone station. Grand Palm Hotel Casino Resort, Cresta Lodge and Mondior Summit are other renowned hotels of Gaborone. Gaborone travel Inn is a three-story medium budget hotel located near the railway station and bus depot.
