Dakar

General Information:

Dakar located on the Cape Verde Peninsula, on the Atlantic coast in the western part of Africa is the capital city of Senegal. Once a tiny fishing village Dakar has now flourished into a bustling port city. The city was a colonial French settlement until its separation from Goree in 1887. It was a major hub of the infamous African slave trade. The population of Dakar is 2.4 million. The climate is tropical, hot and humid. The city is a favorite tourist spot with a good number of historic museums, natural and heritage sites.

Tourist Attractions:

Institut Fondemental d'Afrique Noir (IFAN) or the Dakar National Museum is a place of great tourist interest. The museum is the treasure trove of some exclusive West African artifacts like masks, statues and musical instruments. The Presidential Palace, The Third Millennium Gate, The Grande Mosque and Haan Park are other major tourist attractions of Dakar. Plage Bel-Air N'Gor and Yoff are the finest beaches of Dakar. The beaches provide great rlexation like sunbath, strolling, leisure walls and some fun water sports. Goree is charming place with colonial-style buildings and Maison des Esclaves or Slave Museum.

Transportation:

Léopold Sédar Senghor International Airport lies in Dakar. Air Senegal offers daily flights to the city. Gambia Air Shuttle offers flights from Dakar to Banjul. There are rail services from Dakar to towns en route for Bamako in Mali. The roads are well paves. Buses are popular local transports. They are of two types. Cars Mourides carry forty passengers at a time, while Ndiaga Ndiaye carry fifteen to thirty people at a time. Bush taxis are ideal to travel long distance places. Cars have three row seats accommodating up to seven passengers. Ferry services are available from Dakar to Ziguinchor.

Shopping:
Kermel Market in Dakar is famous for its clothes and fabrics shops. While the Sandaga market is a street market selling a plethora of goods and items specially fruits. Shopping opportunities in the city are endless with umpteen shopping complexes, malls and plazas displaying latest style and fashion of the consumer world.

Hotels:
There are numerous hotels and resorts dotting the city. Sofitel Dakar Taranga is a five star hotel located near the Yoff Airport.
Le meridian President Dakar and Novotel Dakar are some other premier hotels with modern luxuries like air conditioned bars, restaurants, meeting rooms, swimming pools, tennis, golf and fishing. Hotel Oceanic in Dakar is comparatively cheap within the reach of the middle class.
