Bujumbura

General Information:

Bujumbura is the capital city of Burundi on the northeast part of Lake Tanganyika. It is Burundi's major port city and the principal administrative, economic and cultural center. The country suffers from a long period of unrest due to the civil war. Today's Bujumbara is somewhat peaceful and relaxed with a population more than three lakhs. Bujumbura attracts tourists with its various architectures that pose a strong Germanic influence. It was a German colony until the end of the 19thC. The lake area provides excellent water sports like boating, water-skiing and fishing.

Tourist Attractions:

Lake Tanganyika is a prime tourist attraction with a good number of restaurants and cafes on its banks. The place offers exotic scenic views with vast expanse of water, lush greeneries and countless migratory birds flocking around. La Pierre de Livingstone et Stanley is a popular tourist spot. It is a large rock and the rendezvous of David Livingstone and Henry Stanley. Burundi Museum of Life and Burundi Geological Museum are two famous museums of the city. Other interesting places of visit are the Rusizi National Park and Islamic Cultural Center. The Postmaster's House offers spellbinding views with its astounding German architectures.

Transportation:

There is an airport in Bujumbura. But flights to and from Bujumbura are limited due to continuous civil war. Air Burundi and Ethiopian Airlines operates flights to Burundi. Many roads and highways are sealed. Minibuses are popular local transports. There is a ferry service along Lake Tanganyika between Bujumbura and Kigoma, Tanzania.

Shopping:
Various shopping malls, cafes and restaurants throughout the city entertain tourists of all ages. The shopping hours is between 7.30 A.M to 7 P.M from Monday to Saturday.

Bujumbura is dotted with a plethora of hotels and restaurants. "Entente Sportive", "Monastère", and "Cremaillère" are some popular restaurants. Hotels range from expensive to the less costly ones.
