General Information:
Bissau is the capital city of Guinea-Bissau on the Geba River estuary, off the Atlantic Ocean. It is a pleasant city with lush green gardens and palm-fringed streets. It is the country's major administrative and military center. Bissau was a Portuguese colony before its independence. The city is dotted with numerous historical sites, mausoleums, mansions, museums and Portuguese forts. The population of the city is around 400000. The climate is tropical with dry seasons and periodic rainfalls.

Other popular places of interest in the main city are Fortaleza d'Amura Barracks, Amilcar Cabral's Mausoleum, Pidjiguiti Memorial, Guinea-Bissau National Arts Institute and Bissau New Stadium. Many historical cites of the city has been demolished due to the Guinea-Bissau Civil War.

Osvaldo Vieira International Airport is the major airport of Guinea Bissau. Bissau is not considered as a secure tourist place due to the massive violence by the Guinea-Bissau and Senegalese separatist rebels on the countries border area.
