The name Asmara comes from Arbaete Asmara that means, "the united four villages" in the Tigrinya language. The Italian government made it the capital later on. Hence the Italian colonial flavor is reflected on the architectural and cultural tradition of the country. Asmara is a well-structured city with palm fringed streets, residential complexes, official quarters, restaurants, shopping malls and cafeterias.
