Accra City

Accra on the southern part of Ghana is a bustling capital city and the administrative, economic and cultural center of Ghana. The name Accra has been derived from the word Nkran meaning ants linking with the various anthills that form the scenic backdrop of the city.

Accra was a major trading center in the early periods. It contains several historical forts built by the Swedish, British, French and Dutch people. Danish Christianborg fort now known as Osu Castle is one among them. Accra boasts of some of the finest beaches of Africa. Labadi, Kokrobite, Co Co Beach and Ada Beach are some well ones. Many of the beaches provide a wide scope of water sports activities like fishing, swimming and kayaking. The modern city of Accra offers a vibrating nightlife with a variety of pubs, discos, restaurants and bars. Ryan's Pub on Osu, Boomerang on the outskirts of Accra and Jokers on the La Beach are perfect to dance and enjoy the nightlife.

Tourist Attractions:

Perpetual Flame in the Cenotaph of Revolution Square is an interesting place of visit in Accra. The National Museum houses a large collection of exquisite Ghanaian art. The Makola Market located on Kojo Thompson Road is the city's central market and major tourist spot. The Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum on the High Street contains the grave of the first President of Ghana. The National Theater entertains tourists with its various musical shows, plays and dances. Other site seeing in Accra includes Libertaion Square, the Tropical Gardens, the Art Center and the W.E.B. DuBois Memorial Centre for Pan-African Culture.

Getting Around:

The best way to reach Accra is by air. Kotoka International is the major airport. South African Airlines, Lufthansa, British Airways etc offers flights to and from Accra. Buses and taxis are popular local conveyances. La Palm Royal Beach Hotel and Golden Tulip are two top class hotels of Accra with glitzy restaurants, bars, swimming pools and Swiss styled rooms.
